shining, shimmering splendors, dye, y drug lords

Well, because of the crazy large amouts of rain, our landry is not dry. Shocker. SO basically I have the same outfit that I wore on splits yesterday… and 2 tank tops. Basically… Nothing to work with. So we got up, got ready, and I wore my blue skirt again and my tank tops and jean jacket. Yes, you wanted to know such detail. I just hope the laundry is done tomorrow… We went to school, learned a little bit more about our final and such. Yay finals!!! Yay presentations!!! (Oh yeah- we have a presentation for five minutes BY MYESLF. Horrifying, I know. Just to clear things up… I still have not lost my fear of speaking in front of people in English or my incredible skill for stuttering. I can only imagine how speaking in Spanish will go). =)
nuestra clase...

After school, we went to the computer lab to start researching our projects. Lucky thing my internet was NOT working. Haha. After about an hour we went home to finish researching there. Claro we didn’t get much done. Well, it started to POUR rain at about 2:55 & we still hadn’t eaten lunch. We were supposed to meet Marco at 3:05 to go to service… and it was pretty clear that was not going to happen. We called him and changed the time to 3:20, guaranteeing that we would be late to service. We finally got some food, and went outside to meet him. Worst news ever, considering Pable Neruda (the street we live on) was a river. A car drove by us while we were waiting for the bus, and SPLASHED us hardcore. I was so happy that my already dirty blue skirt was wet… and wet with Mexican street water. Quite frankly I was afraid it was stain.
the water did stain... but it wasn't my clothes... rather it was my skin. haha... my feet are now dyed the color of my flip flops... severe scrubbing does not even help. haha.

We got on the bus, and went to service. Once again, it was really nice, but I am kind of sad that tomorrow is our last day.
marco, lorainne, and i at service. =)

After service we went home and chilled for a whole 3 hours. Pretty much we haven’t done that this whole trip. After this little break, we went out to an American club (well, that was what we planned on). We did pretty much nothing for an hour “trying” to decide where to go. We finally got to the club, and they played electronic music. It was pretty much sketch with all the trashys and the drug lords. We decided we would make it fun… so we requested a few reggaeton songs (The Anthem- Bebs it’s quite delightful if you’re interested).
us at the club!

We danced for a bit, but since I’m a kill joy, I wanted to leave at 1:30. Haha. We got home and only paid about 50 pesos ($5) for a taxi. That was nice. We went to sleep, knowing that waking up Thursday would be SO delightful… haha. Love you all! Can’t wait to see you!!!

missionary work, universal studios, & muddy shoes

Today was a wonderful day… it started out lame, but it turned fabulous. I woke up with a really bad stomach ache this morning… so I missed school. I slept for a good chunk of the morning… and then I did some odds and ends. I started writing my essay of a letter to Chase about Mexico. That was fun. It was raining SO much today… I could hear it all day. When Ash got home she told me all about it. Apparently the bus had to take a different route because telephone poles got knocked down on our normal route! CRAZY! Just with rain! Ash went to service, and then I got ready to go on splits with the sister missionaries. It was SO amazing. First of all, I got on the first bus to get to the temple… there was so much traffic from the rain. I was afraid I would miss the sisters if I took the second bus, so I got a taxi. It was POURING while I was taking the taxi. When I got out of the taxi, I was supposed to cross the street a couple of times. Excuse me, did I say street? I meant RIVER. I did not think that the Universal Studios tour was reality… because basically all of the water was rushing down the street. I cannot even describe it. I had to walk across it… in my church clothes. No doubt, I looked like a crazy white girl. I was laughing the whole time because it was so entertaining to me. My poor shoes. Haha. There were literally white caps on the water. AMAZING! I got to the temple to find only the boys waiting there for the elders (who never came to get the boys). I waited for a little bit longer, and Ashley and Jessica showed up… a few minutes later, the sisters showed up. We each got a tag to wear… which was way cool.
Here is me with the tag... I'm Sister Rich! Claro... haha.

We rode on the bus for a while to meet a few other sisters. When we got there, they divided up us three with the sisters. We were legitimately going from door to door! I was with Hermana Sladana Rios.
Here is a picture of us walking down the street...

close up!

She is so nice and so patient. She knew I was pretty nervous to be speaking Spanish to people, so she started me out slowly. I started by saying, “Good afternoon! We are missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My name is Sister Barton, and this is my companion.” Then she would say a few things and bear her testimony. She would ask them if it would be alright if we could come back, too. After a while, Hermana asked me if I would do the rest. I was really hesitant, but after a few times I got it right. I had to ask them what their name was, if they believed in God, and what God meant to them. I really liked it! It made me want to go on a mission. And it was really legitimate to me. I felt like it was a true mission-like experience. It had just rained, so all of the dirt roads were mud… we went door to door and people told us no… we even stopped at the bishop’s house to use the bathroom. I had to share a message on the spot at the end though… that was kind of scary. I just used my scripture mastery knowledge and then bore my testimony. There was one man that whose door we knocked on who already had a Book of Mormon. He didn’t really have anything nice to say about the church, but Hermana Rios knew everything to say back to him. The whole experience was really interesting to me. I am definitely glad I went. =)
Here is a picture of my shoes after the whole experience...

After we went to the gas station to get a little snack… and then we were going to meet some people at a park. We took the bus that they told us to took… but we did not end up at the park. In short, we were somewhere close to downtown, and then we took a taxi to the churro stand to meet our friends. We waited for a bit... Goofed off and such.
Don't mind if I do play on the train tracks... =)

Don't mind if we do sit on the train tracks...

And of course we broke down and ate churros. We drove home on an amazingly pimped out bus that had a black light… Our clothes glowed… it was amazing. Now I am home, and I am getting ready to go to bed! Love you all!!!

apples, jelly, & cajeta

Today we woke up and went to school. It was quite lovely. After school, it looked like it was going to rain, so we went home. We went to service, which is always nice. We only have 3 more days left! I feel that it is going to be sad when we say goodbye. Marco and Tyrel came with us to service today. The ladies basically loved them. And no joke, one lady asked if they were married. When I told the lady no, she got all excited. Here is a picture of me, Lorainne, and Marco. After service, we all went back to our house. We didn’t go inside, but we sat on the little grass patch outside. We talked a lot and we even had an apple biting contest to see who could take the biggest bite. Clearly I have huge cheeks, and not a big bite. Ashley and I went inside to make a quick dinner so we could eat on our way to family home evening. We made jelly sandwiches. I am so dang excited for the day when I get peanut butter. =) I never understood why American missionaries missed peanut butter so much, but it sounds so good right now. Anyways, we ate our jelly sandwiches and headed off to Hermana’s house for family home evening. We played a game with the group and it was really fun. After family home evening, we ate some ice cream. I mixed my chocolate syrup with my vanilla ice cream into a most delicious milk shake! It wasn’t quite as good as In-N-Out, but it was close. Here is a picture of Becky and I downing carmel and chocolate!

After this, because we didn’t have enough sugar, we went to the churro stand to get our churros con cajeta. Mmm… AFTER we got home, Marcela told us that she made FLAN for us, and she wanted us to try some. Basically, three desserts. Ridiculous… The flan was really good though. After flan, we went to bed, which was quite delightful. And to top it all off, tomorrow is LAUNDRY DAY!!! YAY! Good night!!! LOVE YOU ALL!!!

SLEEP, irons, & bubbles

This morning we woke up at about 9:00. It was pretty much the best feeling in the world to get up that late. We got ready and went to church at 11:00. Surprise! Our group sang Joseph Smith's First Prayer during fast and testimony meeting. We went to Sunday school and relief society. Nothing too exciting happened there... I took pictures of sweet, little Rachel today. I know she seems like she is on every post, but clearly she is the most ADORABLE little girl ever. Her parents invited Becky, Marco, Tyrel, and I over for dinner. It was so sweet. While the Mom was getting the food ready, we played with the kids. Marco brought a toy airplane for the little boy (David). He loved it. Marco also brought bubbles for the girls (Rachelita and Ruth). Becky and I soon discovered Ruth's bossy side when we asked her for the bubbles and she would respond with a firm, "Wait your turn!" When the bubbles would go in Rachelita's general direction, she would screech with sheer joy. When I say screech, I mean SCREECH! After a little bit, dinner was ready. We went inside and ate. The food was really good! We had chicken, rice, and mole. (Not mole... like the little animal. haha, it's a sauce). It was fun talking to them in Spanish because they were so nice and patient. The Dad (David) came home, and picked up Rachel and set her on the washing machine. The house is smaller, so the dining room was in the same room as the laundry room. When David set Rachel on the washing machine, Ruth screamed bloody murder and said, "HE'S GOING TO IRON HER!!!" It was SOOO funny. We talked about their family, where they're from, and ourselves too. It was really refreshing to be with such a loving, humble, and sweet family. After, we went to the seminary/ institute graduation to sing in the choir. The family was going, too. I held Rachel on my lap in the front of the car. That made me nervous, but it was so precious because she fell asleep on the way. I got to carry her for a bit, too. =) Then we sang I'm Trying to be Like Jesus in the choir. I love that song, and it's so pretty in Spanish. Heather noticed the Mexican version of Troy Bolton. Also, today I decided that I am going on Splits with the missionaries on Tuesday. I am so excited! I really want to see what it is like to be a missionary, especially in Mexico because they will be speaking Spanish and because the people are so nice. I'm really excited to go back home and tell everyone about everything I've done and learned, but at the same time I don't want to end it. =( It's sad that this week is my last real week of Mexico, and then we go to Puerto Vallarta to party! YAY!!! That is going to be so much fun as well. Anyways, I'll be home soon! See you then! LOVE YOU ALL!!!

"What if I just chucked this pen into the crowd and screamed something weird... like VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!!"

tequila plants, fishy food, & the TALENT SHOW!!!

Today we woke up super early to go to the ruins in Teuchitlan. We rode on the bus- I sat next to Becky and we sucked every last bit of the battery out of that iPod. We first went to a museum that had a movie about the pyramids and a bunch of other cool artifacts. The pyramids are all about 2000 years old and they are all circular. They have little platforms that had stores on them that were shaped in circles around the pyramids. I don’t know if that makes sense, but basically the view from above is really cool. (At least in the pictures and the movie). We saw lots of the old artifacts, and that was cool. The museum had lots of little models of what life was like back then. One thing that was interesting to me was a form of futbol, but they only use their hips to hit the ball. At the end of the game, either the winning or losing team is sacrificed (I didn’t understand all the way). After the museum, we drove for a few miles to get to the ruins. They were rally cool! They are on top of a hill, so there is an amazing view. I’m not sure if you can see any of the green plants in the background, but those are tequila plants! One of the pyramids isn’t excavated yet because they don’t have money- so people are allowed to climb up it. It was weird to me how recently they were discovered! Also, people were finding arrowheads and obsidean all over the ground. I even found a piece! I bought an obsidean statue of a turtle. It is really pretty and it reminds me of Ima’s brown statue of the turtle. After we went to the pyramids we stopped in a little town to go to this little shop to buy souveneirs. I didn’t get anything- a lot of people bought tacos. I learned my lesson. Tacos off the street= sketchy business. I was really hungry though, and so were a lot of people. We walked to this Mexican restaurant, but it was all fish food, and it smelled really fishy. No pun intended. I ordered fish tacos. I ate the first two, and I didn’t really like it. But the third one I took off the tortilla and ate the fried fish with tartar sauce. I should have done that with the first two. I also ordered a pina colada sin alcohol. It was amazingly delicious, so I ordered another one and I wasn’t sure if the waiter heard me say sin alcohol. I’m pretty sure he did because nothing happened to me. After lunch, we got back on the bus to go home. We practiced Joseph Smith’s first prayer in Spanish because we were singing it at the talent show. Becky and I thought it was really funny because every time we would go over a bump, our voices would bounce. We got back to the university and then scrambled back to our houses to get ready for the talent show. We got all ready, and rode the bus. At our second stop, a boy came out of the sushi restaurant to talk to us. He already came out to talk to us a few weeks before and gave us his number. This time, he took pictures of us. We were laughing so hard. He asked us to come back to the sushi shop. We said we had to get on the bus. Fun times. We got to the church, and set up the chairs. We started to get nervous… because a TON of people were there! (Including our families). We were the first act (we sang Color Esperanza). Then I got dressed for Thriller, and it was so cool. Marcela said that Dany loved it. Then we did the Boot Scootin’ Boogie, and that was fun too! The last act was when we sang Joseph Smith’s First Prayer in Spanish. I thought it sounded really good. After the talent show, the ward passed out treats and horchatta. (HAPPY DAY!) The sky was so black, I was sure it was going to rain! We met up with all of our friends after the show. We were going to go dancing. We split up the group into the different cars. We went to Burger King for dinner and then our plans got changed lastminute and we didn’t do anything. Jesus took us home in his new car. I updated my pictures and stuff and then all of the sudden it started to POUR! I took a video of the sound, it was SO loud! I wasn’t outside, but apparently the streets completely turned to rivers and the water in the drains pushed up into the air like fountains! I went to sleep, and slept for a good 8 hours. Happy, happy day!!! LOVE YOU ALL!

caballos, french movies, & converse.

becky and i... next to our horse. how presh.

another random horse...

a mexican man making plates... he was amazing.

This morning we woke up and had breakfast. Then we went to Tlaquepaque as a big group of the foreign exchange students. It was really fun- we went to museums of metal and clay things. Then we went to a store where they make clay things. We watched a man paint a plate. He was really cool, he played the guitar for us and sang songs about the town. I wish he had sold CDs of his music because it was really good. We looked around and bought some really pretty things. I bought a really cool plate. We got home from Tlaquepaque and went home for a little bit. We ate tostadas and it was a beautiful thing. After we ate, Ashley and I met up with Becky and Marco at the Gallerias to go to a movie. We couldn’t really decide on what movie to see, so we decided to watch a movie in Spanish. I was kind of sketched about it because I didn’t think I would understand. Well, we all got in the theater and waited for the movie to start. Once it did… there was Spanish subtitles and the audio was definitely in French. Yes, French. I thought I would be able to MAYBE understand a Spanish movie, but definitely not a French one. After about 10 minutes and a few incredibly sketchy scenes, we decided to leave. We didn’t have to leave for the stake dance until 8:00, so we decided to shop for a bit. Becky and I were looking for a pair of shoes to wear to the dance. I started by wanting heels… and then we decided we should get cool converse instead. In short, we didn’t get anything. But I did see a really cool surf shop with really cool board shorts- I am definitely going back to get them. =) After we went shopping, we went out to the bus stop and waited for the bus- it started to sprinkle and I was afraid that it was going to pour, because I hear when it rains here, it pours! We rode the bus for about 30 minutes to get to the chapel… and when we got to this 8 stake dance that I thought would be HUGE… there was about 10 people there. And the music was salsa, which I don’t know how to dance. We requested Whitney Houston, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and all of our group went to the middle of the floor and danced. All of the Mexicans just stared at us… making fools of ourselves. It was even more awkward because every light was on in the gym… after our American song, the Mexicans switched places with us, and we sat on the side confused. At one point, Manuel (who was the DJ) played Thriller (by this point there was a lot more people there). The Mexicans all made a circle around us, and we did our Thriller dance. They were so pleased and some of them video taped it on their phones. It was really fun and I’m definitely looking forward to doing that back in the states. I went outside for a while because I didn’t want to dance because I was tired. There were snacks- that was cool, but I didn’t really like it that much because I was tired. After the dance we took a taxi home… I was so glad to be home and I went straight to bed. LOVE YOU ALL!!!

10 children, desserts, and horses

Today was quite the day! First we got up early so we could get to school on time with our amazing home-made dessert… aka, store bought flan. So we went to the grocery store and bought this six-pack of flan. It looked like those pudding containers… and it was definitely sketchy.
eatsin our flans...

Anyways, we got to class… and we each did our presentations on our desserts. Basically, I ate 50 different kinds of desserts without any shame. My bad.
what is mejor than cake (tres leches) and princess napkins? what's that??? nothing? ha.

After we had our dessert presentation/party… we had a test. Yes, I know. A very drastic change of feelings. I don’t know how I feel about the test yet, but I don’t think it was that bad.
my amazing doodle...

After school, we went swimming… and then we went to service. Today we told Chupita that Rachel wanted 10 kids just to see how she would react. It was really funny… she gasped for like 5 seconds. And she was mumbling about how it was crazy and how she was scared to have that many kids. Those ladies are my heroes. After we went to service for about an hour, we went horseback riding.
becky, steph, and I before horses...

mindy and i, riding our horses. In short, Mindy's horse loved mine. =)

It was SO much fun. Basically, they let us roam around without much supervision. I let my horse pretty much run as fast as it pleased. That pretty much made my life. It made me so sad that I am not a real cowgirl in real life… Becky and I decided that we will date cowboys so we can ride on their horses. That might be using. I don’t really know. We got to ride for about an hour, and then after that we went to Applebees to watch the NBA finals. All of the poor workers looked for the game for about thirty minutes on the TV and couldn’t find it. Eventually, we just gave up and ate hamburgers. YUM. YUM. After Applebees, about five of us came back to our house/ park by the house to watch Ratatouille. Basically, the guard told on us. By the time I got to our house to get my laptop and DVD, Marcela was on the phone with the guard. I thought we were being so sneaky cool by watching a DVD outside. I thought wrong. We had to leave the terrace by 11:20, so we didn’t get much into our movie. However, it was nice being able to get to sleep at a slightly decent hour. That is all that happened for today!!!
Bug bite update: Bugs love me. I don’t know why. I guess I eat too much sugar, because they eat ME all the time. And I feel that they should leave me alone… so my legs aren’t scarred by HUGE bug bites. =/

picas, bum shots, & the chase.

Today. Oh my, today. What a day. First I woke up to look if my legs were any better. Turns out, they were worse. I got ready and went downstairs, and after about an hour of being awake, my legs itched really bad. By the end of school… which was a good time… the bites were really red and HUGE. And my legs itched all over. I went swimming with Marco and Ash, and we swam some fly and breaststroke. It was nice to get back in the groove of things, that’s for sure. Anyways, I got out of the pool and casi died because my legs itched so bad. They were really bad right after I got out of the pool. We decided we should ask someone about them… we asked Marcela and she said she killed the mosquitos. (which is nice, but I still had 50 bites all over). Here is a picture...

heres another one on my ankle... classy.

heres a picture of my arm... this one has a line coming off of it.

So we went to Hermana Stallings to have her take us to the doctor. She took me… it was definitely weird because I didn’t understand much of what he said. At one point when just Hermana and the doctor were talking, I asked Ashley what she thought they had just talked about. She was like, “Well, at one point I thought they were going to give you a shot on your bum.” We laughed at this joke because there was no way it was true. However, a nurse came in right then… needle in hand. I screeched a little bit, and Ashley started laughing hysterically. Basically think of Beethoven. I know, this movie is so ‘90s. But it is amazing, and it truly applies. There is one part where they are going to put down poor ol’ Beethoven, and (I think) the Dad pulls out this huge old shot and squeezes the liquid out the top. In short, it is emotionally scarring. Well, the lady did that. And she meant it. There was no Hollywood, no cameras. Just me and my fear of needles and shots. She gave me a shot… it was hardly my bottom… it was more my lower back. Anyways, she rammed the needle in… and Ashley was close to my head and we were just freaking out and she was laughing… I wasn’t really. I didn’t think it was that funny. But yeah, I got a shot on my bottom. In Mexico. How legit is that? Why you ask? It is because of some allergic reaction to whatever is biting me. SO yeah. Bugs bite me. The result is a big shot. Joy joy joy. After my shot, Ashley and I went home. Basically whatever was in that shot knocked me out. I was laying on my bed… and the next think I remember was waking up an hour later. Haha. Once I woke up I felt great though… and the bites stopped itching! We went to our Talent Show dress rehersal… I feel that everyone looks really good! I am super excited to do it! After practice, we started walking to the bus stop. I kid you not, a cockroach chased me. I almost died, so I screamed bloody murder. Apparently everyone inside heard, because Marco came to the window and was like “Was that you!?!?” with the most horrified look on his face. The scream had merit… the cockroach was huge. What was I supposed to do? Just look at it? FALSE. Anyways, we took the bus home… and I took surfing pictures! HOORAY!

Now I am home… we are going to wake up tomorrow morning to study and finish up our flan project. Yum! Have a great night! LOVE YOU ALL!

snakes, beach boys, & divine ice cream

Hola! Today was a great day! We woke up and got ready… and then we went downstairs to eat breakfast. En serio, we ate NESQUIK cereal and donuts! So basically, we ate heaven for breakfast. It was so lovely because after I finished my cereal, the milk was basically chocolate milk and I drank it all up. MMM…MMM…GOOD.

Also, I have about 50 bug bites all over my legs. They don’t really itch so it’s not too bad. They just look horrifying. After breakfast, we went to catch the bus. The jerk buses drove past us two times, so we got to school late. During break, we practiced the Thriller dance. It was fuuuuuunnnnn… After school we went swimming. Today we started backstroke. They are so good, and I am so proud. =) While we were swimming there was a water snake SWIMMING through the pool. EN SERIO. I almost died. Ok, actually I didn’t almost die. At first I thought it was a worm… but the more I looked at it and thought about it-I realized that worms don’t swim. Also, they don’t swim with their heads out of the water. Definitely not good news. We went home and ate some lunch. It was good! It was spaghetti, AY, I almost died of happiness. Granted, there was not amazing meat sauce or meatballs like my birthday dinner, but the noodles were there-and I accepted that. After lunch I went upstairs and got ready for service. Ash didn’t go today because she went on splits with the missionaries (I think I am going next week). I brought my iPod to keep myself distracted getting there. I listened to Beach Boys and forgot how amazing they actually are. After service we went to do an intensive Thriller practice in the church parking lot. It was way fun, my feet got dirt nasty. After practice Rachel showed up with her dad. She is so cute, Ash took a picture of us. =)

We partied a bit in the parking lot, and then after we went to get ice cream… happy days. “that is lo major helado I have ever probado.” Then we went to Walmart. Also happy times. I ate a Snickers bar. It is definitely a love-hate relationship. I suppose my problem is that the love usually overpowers the hate. Eh, oh well. =) Also, I sprayed my legs with bug spray… so hopefully no more bichos can bite me. =/ I am home… have a lovely night! LOVE, me!

fabric softener, clips, and crabs.

Today was a superb day as well! We went to school, and learned lots of course. After school I learned the country dance for the talent show… and then we went home and waited for some food. =) Also, it was dang hot… I looked everywhere for my clip to put my hair up and I could NOT find it! We ate, and then went to Dany’s basketball game. It was so intense! All of the parents were screaming at the poor girls, I kind of felt bad for them! It was really fun though… the parents had drums and maracas and were chanting. It was pretty much a big deal. At one point during the game, I looked over at our mom, and nudged Ash. We noticed that Marcela had a clip… it was creepishly similar to mine. It was even broken in the same place. What are the odds. I haven’y quite figured out how to ask where my clip is. I feel that I will not have a clip for the rest of the trip unless I buy one. Haha. Dany won, and now they are going to the championships!!! She is so cute! Here is a picture of Marcela and Dany...

After the game, we got this amazing ice cream thing, but it was in a plastic bag. I feel that I cannot describe it properly, but it was amazingly delicious. And it was flavored none other than horchata. We went home and got ready for family home evening. Our mom came and knocked on the door and told us the glorious news that our clothes could get washed tomorrow! She told us we needed soap for our clothes. We thought, “Oh no problem! We have soap… we have been washing our clothes in the sink for ages.” We showed her the “soap”… turns out it is actually fabric softener. Good thing I can read in Spanish. I feel slightly devastated/disgusted/dirt-nasty that my clothes aren’t actually clean right now. Thank goodness for tomorrow. As we were walking out the door, the little boy next door showed us his crab.

It was emotionally scarring, and he thought it was funny to torture us, so we left. THEN he came out of his house with a TURTLE and chased us down the street! Lucky thing Ash had her camera.

We got to family home evening in one piece, and practiced our dances, and it was way fun! I am really excited to do it, I think that everything will turn out really good! After family home evening we practiced a bit more and went to the gas station to buy some laundry detergent (that was actually soap) and some cookies.

Then we went upstairs, and are just taking it easy!!! Love you all! I will write more tomorrow!!!
